V-Rings (Axial Shaft Seals)
A V-ring is a single-lip, all-elastomer rotary seal that stretches over a shaft and seals axially against a rotating counterface — the opposite geometry from a radial lip (oil) seal, which seals against the shaft's outside diameter instead.
Overview
How it works
Because a V-ring is held in place purely by its own elastic stretch — no metal case, no housing bore fit — it rotates with the shaft rather than staying static like an oil seal. The lip sweeps a face perpendicular to the shaft, which makes it tolerant of shaft run-out, misalignment and axial float that would damage a conventional radial-lip seal, and it can be fitted or removed without dismantling the housing.
Why use it
Key benefits
- Tolerates shaft misalignment and axial movement that a radial oil seal cannot
- No housing bore machining required — fits directly on the shaft
- Simple to install or replace without disturbing the bearing housing
- Works well as a secondary, low-cost exclusion seal ahead of a primary oil seal

Applications
Where V-rings are used
Rotating shafts and bearings across industrial machinery, automotive drivetrains, pumps, motors and gearboxes — most often as a splash/dirt-exclusion seal in front of a primary oil seal.
