Silicone Rubber Extrusions

Silicone extrusion is continuous-profile silicone stock — cord, sheet, tubing or a custom cross-section — produced by pushing uncured silicone through a shaped die and curing it, rather than molding each piece individually.

Overview

Why extrusion, and why silicone

Extrusion is the practical route to continuous-length or custom cross-section rubber stock where individual molding would be slow or uneconomic — cord for cutting to length, sheet for die-cut gaskets, tubing for fluid transfer. Silicone is the default material for this range because it is inherently food- and medical-grade capable, tolerates a very wide temperature swing, and holds its shape and surface finish well as an extruded profile.

Silicone Extrusion Process and Capabilities

Silicone extrusion is a continuous manufacturing process where uncured silicone rubber is forced through a die of the required cross-section, then vulcanised in a continuous oven to set its final shape. This process produces profiles of any cross-section — round, square, rectangular, U-channel, P-section, D-section, tubular and custom shapes — in virtually unlimited lengths. FITCO operates extrusion lines capable of producing profiles from 1 mm to 100 mm cross-section dimension in durometers from 20 to 80 Shore A.

Silicone rubber is chosen for extrusions when the application requires extreme temperature resistance (–60 °C to +230 °C), food-grade or medical-grade compliance (FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, USP Class VI), excellent weathering and UV resistance, or high electrical insulation. Silicone profiles maintain their flexibility and sealing force across the full temperature range without hardening or cracking, unlike most organic rubbers.
