PTFE Back-up Rings & PTFE Parts
Back-up rings are used with O-rings in static and dynamic sealing to prevent extrusion into the clearance gap under high pressure. Supplied in single-turn scarf-cut, spiral multi-turn and solid uncut styles, plus a wider range of precision-machined PTFE components.

PTFE back-up rings, virgin and filled grades.
Overview
Why PTFE, and why filled grades
Under high pressure an O-ring will slowly extrude into the clearance gap between mating parts; a hard, extrusion-resistant ring on the low-pressure side closes that gap off. PTFE is the standard material for this because it is dimensionally stable, chemically inert and usable across a very wide temperature range — but unfilled (virgin) PTFE alone can be soft enough to cold-flow under sustained load, which is why glass, bronze or graphite fillers are added where higher compressive strength or wear resistance is needed.

Custom machined parts
Made to order
Seals, lips, cups, bearings, bushings, wear strips, ball valve seats, piston rings, diaphragms, insulators, lantern rings, gaskets and washers — machined to drawing in PTFE and PTFE-filled compounds for service from -450°F to +500°F.
Grades
Which PTFE grade, and why
Virgin / Glass-filled PTFE
Virgin for maximum chemical inertness and cryogenic service; glass-filled for improved wear resistance under dynamic load.
Bronze / Graphite-filled PTFE
Bronze for higher compressive strength and hardness; graphite for self-lubrication and thermal conductivity in high-speed dry-running duty.
