Overview

What it is

A gasket is a flat, molded or die-cut elastomer sheet shaped to seal a joint between two mating flat surfaces — typically where an O-ring's round cross-section isn't the right geometry for the joint.

Compressed between two flanges or housing halves, the gasket fills surface irregularities and maintains a seal as the two faces are bolted or clamped together, accommodating a wider range of flange flatness and surface finish than a round-section O-ring can.

Why use it

Key benefits

  • Matches irregular or non-circular flange shapes
  • Wide range of standard and custom die-cut profiles
  • Can be laminated or reinforced for higher-pressure flange joints

Materials

Which compound, and why

Material

NBR (Nitrile / Buna-N)

Oil- and fuel-exposed flange and housing gaskets.

Material

EPDM

Water, steam and weather-exposed gaskets.

Material

Silicone (VMQ)

Food, medical and wide-temperature static gaskets.

Material

FKM / FPM (Fluoroelastomer)

High-temperature or chemically aggressive flange service.

Applications

Where it's used

Flange sealing, enclosure and housing gaskets, equipment covers, and custom die-cut profiles.

Gasket Types and Applications

Rubber gaskets create a static seal between two flanged or bolted surfaces. Unlike O-rings which sit in a groove, gaskets are flat or profiled sheets compressed between mating faces by bolt torque. FITCO manufactures die-cut, water-jet cut and moulded rubber gaskets in any 2D profile from customer drawings or samples, in thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 25 mm.

Common gasket applications include pipe flanges, valve bonnets, pump housings, heat exchanger covers, electrical enclosures (IP-rated), tank manways, engine covers and access panels. For each application, the gasket material must be compatible with the sealed fluid, resistant to the operating temperature range, and soft enough to conform to the flange surface imperfections while being hard enough to resist blowout under bolt load.

Material Selection for Gaskets

NBR gaskets are the general-purpose choice for petroleum oils, fuels and hydraulic fluids up to 120 °C. EPDM gaskets excel in water, steam, and mild chemical applications up to 150 °C and are the standard choice for potable water systems. Silicone gaskets handle extreme temperatures from –60 °C to +200 °C and are used in food processing, medical devices and oven doors. Neoprene (CR) gaskets provide good weathering, ozone and moderate chemical resistance for outdoor and HVAC applications. For aggressive chemicals and high temperatures, FKM (Viton) gaskets provide the widest chemical resistance range.
