Rubber Cord & Cord Stock

Continuous-length elastomeric cord supplied by the metre or as bonded/vulcanised custom-diameter O-rings for oversize seals outside standard molded ranges.

Oversize custom gaskets, field-fabricated seals, low-volume large-diameter O-ringsTypical applications
FITCO rubber cord stock

Continuous rubber cord stock, coiled for cut-to-length or splicing.

Overview

What it is

Rubber cord is continuous-length elastomer stock supplied by the metre, round in cross-section, for cutting to length and joining on-site rather than molding as a finished ring.

Cord ends are butt-joined and vulcanised (or cyanoacrylate-bonded, for lower-duty use) to form a ring in whatever diameter is needed — useful where a molded O-ring in that exact size doesn't exist, or where only a short production run is justified.

Why use it

Key benefits

  • Any diameter without new mold tooling
  • Practical for oversize or one-off custom seals
  • Field-repairable — a new ring can be spliced on-site

Materials

Which compound, and why

Material

NBR (Nitrile / Buna-N)

General-purpose oil and fuel resistance, the most common cord material.

Material

Silicone (VMQ)

Food, medical or wide-temperature static gasket cord.

Material

EPDM

Water, steam and weather-exposed cord seals.

Applications

Where it's used

Oversize custom gaskets, field-fabricated seals, and low-volume large-diameter O-rings outside standard molded ranges.

What Rubber Cord Stock Is Used For

Rubber cord stock is a continuous round-section elastomer profile used to fabricate large-diameter O-rings by cutting to length and bonding the ends (vulcanised splice or adhesive joint). When a standard moulded O-ring is not available in the required size — either because the diameter is too large for standard moulds or because the size is non-standard — cord stock provides a practical, cost-effective alternative.

Cord stock is also used for packing glands, draft seals, gap fillers, vibration isolation strips, and anywhere a continuous round-section rubber profile is needed. It can be supplied in standard cross-section diameters from 1.5 mm to 30 mm and in lengths up to 100 metres per roll, with tolerances conforming to ISO 3302 for extruded products.

Splicing and Bonding

For closed-ring applications, cord stock is cut to the required circumference plus a small allowance for the splice joint. The ends are bonded using a vulcanised (heat-cured) splice for maximum strength — a properly made vulcanised joint achieves 80–90% of the parent material strength. Adhesive (cold) splices are faster but achieve only 50–60% joint strength and are suitable for low-pressure static applications. FITCO supplies cord stock with pre-cut and pre-chamfered ends on request, and offers factory-spliced rings in any diameter.
